Hardin’s campus arrest and disciplinary crisis

After We Collided

Hardin’s campus arrest and disciplinary crisis turns his jealousy-driven conflict with Zed into a matter of public safety and institutional accountability. Hardin is found handcuffed in a campus cell after a fight and extensive property damage; the consequences may include jail or expulsion. Tessa’s efforts to calm him and persuade Zed not to press charges complicate the immediate legal stakes, but do not resolve the university’s response or the conflict between Hardin’s possessiveness and Tessa’s autonomy.

Background: secrets, forgiveness, and control

The crisis emerges against a relationship already unsettled by disclosure and forgiveness. During a confrontation involving Tessa’s mother, Tessa stays behind Hardin as he shields her and tells her mother that she is an adult who can choose whether to stay. Trish urges Tessa to listen to her mother, leaving Tessa hurt by the dismissal. Her choice to remain with Hardin is therefore presented as her own, even as others contest it.

That choice is complicated by what Tessa learns about Hardin’s past. He describes how James showed other people a video of Natalie after she rejected him. The video spread within a day; Natalie’s family, prominent in its church community, expelled her from their home, and she lost the scholarship that was to take her to a private university. Tessa recognizes the severity of the harm and wonders whether she could suffer a similar fate. The disclosure gives her reason to question the trust she has just extended to Hardin, rather than treating forgiveness as proof that the past has been repaired.

Tessa nevertheless calls Hardin and asks him to come home so they can talk. He answers with surprise and rushes to agree. She intends to make clear that his actions were wrong while also telling him she loves him. This earlier attempt to hold both affection and accountability in view sharpens the later crisis: her concern for Hardin does not erase her objections to his conduct.

The conflict over Zed

Hardin’s demand that Tessa avoid Zed establishes a pattern of control in the lead-up to the arrest. He tells Tessa he does not want her near Zed and will not repeat the warning. When she asks what he means by staying away, he specifies no contact at all: no messages and no visits to the science building. Tessa challenges his authority to decide whom she can speak to, while Hardin points to a message sent to her from his phone as proof of Zed’s involvement.

Their argument also includes a proposed bargain: Tessa agrees to stay away if Hardin does not fight Zed. Hardin defines the condition broadly, insisting that there be no contact of any kind. The exchange makes the imbalance plain: Tessa is pressed to surrender contact with Zed to prevent violence that Hardin himself is responsible for controlling. Elsewhere, she protests that he has effectively forced her to leave Zed’s house, and he acknowledges internally that he is trying to keep her in the car despite denying it to her. These episodes frame the arrest not as an isolated disagreement, but as an escalation within a relationship where protection and restriction are difficult to separate.

Arrest and immediate response

Ken and Landon bring Tessa outside and tell her that Hardin has been arrested for fighting and vandalizing campus property. She struggles to take in the news. Following Hardin’s voice down the hall, she finds him pacing inside a small cell with his hands cuffed behind him. He is shouting insults at the people around him, and Ken and Landon are close behind Tessa as she approaches.

Hardin objects to Tessa being brought there and directs his anger at Ken and Landon. Tessa speaks to him through the bars, urging him to stop and recognize that Ken is trying to help. The scene briefly shifts when Hardin looks at her and settles enough to nod and agree to calm down. Ken thanks Tessa, then warns Hardin that continuing to yell will make his already serious situation worse. Her presence can interrupt his outburst in the moment, but it cannot undo what has brought him into custody.

The extent of the damage and the stakes

Landon explains why the incident is so serious. The laboratory where Zed had been working has sustained thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. Zed has a broken nose and a concussion and has been taken to the hospital. The account forces Tessa to recognize that Hardin did more than shove or threaten him: the assault caused substantial injury as well as damage to university property.

The potential consequences grow more severe when Landon adds that Hardin shoved a professor to the floor. A student in Zed’s class has already given a statement saying that Hardin came into the lab specifically looking for Zed. That account places the confrontation in a clearer sequence and makes it harder to treat the damage as incidental to a spontaneous argument. Ken is trying to keep Hardin out of jail, but Landon cannot say whether that will be possible. Even if Zed declines to press charges, the outcome remains uncertain.

The university representative raises expulsion as a possibility. Ken appeals to the fact that Hardin is his son, but the representative responds that assaulting a professor and damaging school property cannot simply be overlooked. Tessa understands that Hardin’s temper now threatens his education as well as his immediate freedom. Her distress includes anger at what he has done; she considers confronting him physically, but recognizes that neither that nor giving way to despair would help.

Tessa’s appeal to Zed and the unresolved outcome

Tessa goes to Zed and asks whether he will press charges. He says that he will, and she pleads with him not to. He is still dealing with the effects of the assault, and the conversation returns attention to him as the person harmed, rather than treating the case only as a problem for Hardin and his family.

Tessa tells Zed that if he does not press charges, Hardin will not trouble him again. Zed agrees, but asks Tessa to consider how much easier her life might be without Hardin. He points out that Hardin attacked him and that Tessa is once again trying to clean up the consequences. Tessa acknowledges to herself that she is appealing to Zed’s feelings for her to persuade him. His decision removes one possible source of charges, but it does not settle whether Hardin will face jail, expulsion, or other university discipline. The crisis ends with immediate legal risk partly eased and the larger question of accountability unresolved.
